On Monday afternoon, five students at Bayview High walk into detention.
Bronwyn, the brain, is Yale-bound and never breaks a rule.
Addy, the beauty, is the picture-perfect homecoming princess.
Nate, the criminal, is already on probation for dealing.
Cooper, the athlete, is the all-star baseball pitcher.
And Simon, the outcast, is the creator of Bayview High’s notorious gossip app.
Only, Simon never makes it out of that classroom. Before the end of detention Simon’s dead. And according to investigators, his death wasn’t an accident. On Monday, he died. But on Tuesday, he’d planned to post juicy reveals about all four of his high-profile classmates, which makes all four of them suspects in his murder. Or are they the perfect patsies for a killer who’s still on the loose?
Everyone has secrets, right? What really matters is how far you would go to protect them.
I quite enjoyed One of Us Is Lying. Things kept unfolding and unfolding. However, the ending was disappointing. I suspected a suicide stunt all along, but I didn’t want to be right because I expected it. When Jake’s involvement was revealed, I physically squealed because I didn’t expect that, but it turns out Simon was the mastermind all along. Still, Jake’s involvement was a nice surprise.
At many times I felt the book was written to tell rather than show, and some of the things said were cliche and even kiddish. Bronwyn and Nate’s romance feels sudden, even though supposedly they were crushing on each other since middle school. Even their breakup feels sudden. And their reunion even more sudden. I feel like if Nate’s perspective was in there before the reunion it would feel less sudden.
Everything wrapped up nicely in the last chapter and the epilogue. Other than small disappointments, it was overall a great read. Since I liked One of Us Is Lying, I will soon be reading Karen M. McManus’s new novel, Two Can Keep a Secret, which I believe came out recently.
