Film Review: Bird Box (2018)

Warning: this post may contain spoilers for Bird Box. I have this weird thing. I am disinclined to try something that gets a lot of Internet hype. I think that’s the part of me that refuses to hop on a bandwagon, but then, rejecting something because of its hype is giving in to the herd mentality in a way. So yeah, I put off watching Bird Box, until a good friend told me she watched it and I should too. It was a good film, although I came to realize that the hype was more around the memes rather than the film itself. I admit, they’re pretty funny. Malorie is thrown into an apocalyptic situation mid-pregnancy. In a world where seeing the outside causes you to die, they fight to survive. When they get to a safe(r) haven, that is when she names Girl and Boy. She was ambivalent about her baby from the beginning, but her motherhood is further delayed by the hardship of survival. It’s not just parenthood that the apocalypse takes away. Trust is broken when Felix and Lucy leaves house and takes the car. Compassion leads to destruction, like when Olympia lets Gary in and he…

Film Review: A Simple Favor (2018)

Warning: this post may contain spoilers to the movie. In A Simple Favor, successful business executive and a mother Emily Nelson (Blake Lively) suddenly disappears one day, and her best friend Stephanie (Anna Kendrick) unveils her dark secrets in search for her friend. I am not the biggest fan of plot twists but it was done right, and the twist after twist kept me on the edge of my seat. I don’t comment on the actors’ acting very often when I review movies, but the two lead actresses’ performance was so excellent. Blake Lively did a great job playing the beautiful psychopath, but Anna Kendrick was even more perfect as an overly enthusiastic suburban mom. Where she points a gun at Sean and Emily, I thought, huh, this isn’t as convincing as what I would expect from a gifted actor like Kendrick. Then it is revealed that she was really meta-acting, and I was reminded of how I should have never doubted such a talented actor. This is one of very few movies that I actually like better than the book, although the book has its own merits, and since there are quite a lot of differences between them I…

Favourite Albums From 2018

Logic – YSIV Logic does lots of different styles of rap and Young Sinatra ones happen to be my favourites, so when Logic once said in an interview that he isn’t doing Young Sinatra anymore, I was a bit disheartened. Then, what do you know? He came out with YSIV and every song is powerful. My favourite is The Return. it almost made me jump and yell, YEAH! YOUNG SINATRA IS BACK! Jorja Smith – Lost & Found Jorja’s voice is so sultry and every song feels kinda like foreplay. Teenage Fantasy evoked so much nostalgia. As she sang, want it when we can’t have it, when we got it we don’t seem to want it… I thought of all my past teenage fantasies. It was a great album to have when I was having a hard time finding myself (still am) this year. Lost & Found is an appropriate title in that aspect. Camila Cabello – Camila I thought Sweetener would be my favourite pop album of the year. But Ariana came out with a lot of trap style tracks, which I’m not very fond of, so Camila ended up being my favourite of the year. Havana was a…
